Thomas Jefferson regarded the teachings of Jesus Christ as presented by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John to be the ‘outlines of a system of the most sublime morality which has ever fallen from the lips of man’. His selected extracts from the Gospels of Christ was intended to present the ethical philosophy of Christ in its purest form. These were compiled into two parts – ‘The Philosophy of Jesus’ (1804) and ‘The Life and Morals of Jesus’ (1819). These extracts will be useful for those students who want quick access to the ethical precepts of Christ that are otherwise scattered about in the New Testament.
